New innovations in 3D printing have seen the use of light-based 3D printing for use in biology and medicine. Kristan Worthington, an assistant professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa, has recently been awarded a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER grant to continue her work in this emerging area.

Kristan Worthington and Edward Sander are investigating the impact that low gravity environments have on regenerative tissue technology that could be used for therapy during space missions. The intent is to advance the collective ability to use stem cell technology during long-term spaceflight for astronauts that require treatment.

Jacob Thompson, a senior studying biomedical engineering, has been awarded the National Science Foundation Research Fellowship, granting him an annual stipend and funds toward tuition for the continuation of his studies.
